Half Streets |
A half street divides the street space between motorized vehicles and non-motorized vehicles. Sixth Street in Missoula holds wonderful potential for this type of conversion (Fifth Street would be converted back to 2-way traffic). |

Here's a sketch of a half street- the top is for parking and local car access, the bottom is a bi-directional, cross-town, non-motorized pathway. The black circles at the bottom represent big clay pots filled with plants (or something similar) that allow bikes through but not cars (an urban 'gortex'). This treatment depends on parking shifts- to the other side of the street, to the side street, to the alley, etc. If a resident refuses a shift then it is OK to have a small break in the commuter way. |
