Website for Context-Sensitive Highway Design- The Federal Highway Administration

'Context-sensitive design refers to efforts to better blend roads with their surroundings, such as urban areas, historic districts or scenic countrysides. Context-sensitive design asks first about the need and the purpose of the transportation project and then addresses safety, mobility and the preservation of scenic, aesthetic, historic, environmental and other community values. The process involves a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach in which citizens are part of the design team'

'You should take a copy of this very positive policy statement to your city, county and state government and ask them to adopt it. THE CAMPAIGN IS ON! Canada Well-Being Measurement Act (CWBMA). The CWBMA offers an opportunity for public re-assessment of the purposes of society. The Act (Bill C-469) was introduced in the House of Commons on April 5, 2000. People care about each other, their communities and the environment that supports us. By measuring and regularly reporting on the well-being of these things, the CWBMA can establish them as valid goals - things we want to maintain and improve through our tax money and the decision making power that we give government.'

Slow Down

The May 13th edition of Status Report, the newsletter of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, has a 2-page article about pedestrian/motor vehicle crashes and vehicle speeds. As they say... "about 5 percent of pedestrians hit by a vehicle traveling 20mph will die. The fatality rate jumps to 40 percent for cars traveling 30mph, 80 percent for cars going 40mph, and 100 percent for cars going 50mph or faster." They quote a "Literature review on vehicle travel speeds and pedestrian injuries," written by Bill Leaf et al for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
